You can speak French and still miss your level.
The TCF tells you what it assesses. It doesn't show you what earns a B2. Practise the real writing and speaking tasks, graded against those criteria, and find out where you stand.
Your French isn't the only thing being scored
Every answer is given a level first, A1 to C2. Miss one B2 requirement and the task caps at B1, no matter how good your French is. Those requirements aren't in the official guide.
EO tâche 2
Good questions aren't enough. B2 needs real back-and-forth interaction.
EO tâche 3
A clear position isn't enough. The rubric wants the other side's view and arguments too.
EE tâche 1
Most candidates only reach B1 here. B2 and C1 are rare, because tâche 1 is a short, everyday message, not a showcase for advanced vocabulary or complex sentences. Less is more: cover every element of the prompt and keep the register right.
None of this is about knowing more French. What's more important is knowing what each task is really testing, and the official guide won't teach it to you.

The task
Expression écrite, tâche 2. A message to friends about your first week of language classes, plus your impressions of them. 120–150 words. Target level B2.
The response
Salut tout le monde, je voulais vous raconter ma première semaine à l'école de langues. Le lundi, j'étais un peu stressé parce que je ne connaissais personne, mais finalement c'était bien.
Les cours sont très intéressant et le professeur est très patient. Il explique bien la grammaire et il répond à toutes nos questions. Il y a des étudiants de plusieurs pays, alors c'est amusant de parler avec eux pendant les pauses.
Au début j'avais peur de parler devant la classe, mais maintenant je suis plus à l'aise. Je suis content d'avoir commencé ces cours et je pense que je vais beaucoup progresser cette session.
Why it caps at B1
The week is told clearly and a genuine reaction is given, but every sentence stays short and simple, the connectors don't go beyond mais and alors, and the closing opinion is stated rather than developed. B2 wants that reaction argued, with richer connectors like ce qui m'a le plus marqué, c'est que or du coup.
Mistakes
- grammaire Les cours sont très intéressant → Les cours sont très intéressants — the adjective has to agree in number with "les cours".
